Mara consults to health care practitioners and hospitals, guiding their efforts to provide relationship-centered, developmentally supportive care to families experiencing perinatal crisis. She is the co-author of Parenting Your Premature Baby and Child: The Emotional Journey (Fulcrum, 2004) and Intensive Parenting: Surviving the Journey Through the NICU (Fulcrum, 2013).

Dr. Stein is a staunch advocate for trauma-informed care and is trained and certified in a range of integrative trauma therapies. She is a certified EMDR therapist, EMDRIA Approved Consultant and a Trainer for the Institute for Creative Mindfulness, where she is on faculty. In response to the requests of her maternal mental health colleagues, she now offers EMDR training (both Basic Training and Advanced practice) for therapists who treat families facing perinatal mood and anxiety disorders and reproductive trauma. Her trauma work is grounded in her personal perinatal journey, which began 25 years ago and taking her through infertility, twin pregnancy, prolonged hospital bedrest, the NICU, and years of raising NICU graduates.
